Football Mason Jars

Today is our annual fantasy football draft.  My husband, who is perhaps one of the  biggest football fans ever, is the commissioner for a local league and each year we hold the draft at our  house.  This day ranks right up there with Christmas in his book!

This year, to add to the decorations, I decided to try an idea I saw on Pinterest.

To begin, I purchased 4 mason jars at Hobby Lobby, along with some paint:  black, brown, white, and two shades of green.

Next, I painted one jar brown and one black.  I then taped off horizontal lines for the football field jar, and vertical ones for the referee jar.  Technically, I was supposed to prime the jars first, but I tend to be impatient, so I skipped that step.  I painted the exposed areas on the football field jar one shade of green, and the exposed vertical lines on the referee jar black.

The instructions said to let the jars dry overnight between each coat of paint, but…as I said, I’m impatient.  So, I used my hairdryer to speed up the drying, adding a second coat to the brown and black jars, and to the exposed stripes.  I then peeled off the painters tape and free-handed the remaining stripes.  If you have a shaky hand, you’ll want to use painters tape, but I think mine turned out okay without it.

Finally, I added the laces to the football jar, the Xs and Os to the chalkboard jar, the white lines and numbers to the football field jar, and glued buttons on the referee’s shirt.

These jars were a lot of fun to make, and I plan to use them as part of my fall decorations this year.

By the way, this is my husband and me, sporting our fantasy football draft shirts.
