Rag Wreath

A few weeks ago a friend of mine sent me a picture of a rag wreath she had made, using her grandmother’s old quilting pieces.  It was beautiful!  I knew immediately I had to make one for myself.

I decided to make a fall themed wreath, and selected 5 coordinating fabrics.

You can use as few or as many different fabrics as you want–you’ll just need a couple yards total to fit an 18″ wire wreath form.  I cut the fabric into strips 1″ wide and 6″ – 7″ long.  However, the next time I make one I’ll use strips that are around 9″ long.  Some of the strips were hard to tie and i would have liked for the wreath to have been a little bit fuller.

The wire wreath form I used had 4 wires.  I tied strips of fabric to the top two wires; then to the bottom two wires; and finally to the middle two wires, repeating until I had surrounded the wreath.  I had 2.5 yards of fabric total, and had enough strips left over that I could probably do another small wreath.

Since the wreath wasn’t quite as full as I wanted, I added the chalkboard sign in the middle, using a chalk pen to write “Happy Fall”.

This is the finished product, hanging above my mantle.

This is an easy project, although it can be a bit tedious.  If you have a rotary cutter I would highly recommend using it to cut the fabric strips.  I also recommend watching a good movie or tv show while doing all the tying.  I think the results are worth the tediousness!
